Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition: Cross-over

To facilitate the transition to the Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition, The Royal Conservatory is pleased to announce the following cross-over plan.

September 1, 2015–August 31, 2016

Item Cross-over Period
New Marks Breakdown Effective September 1, 2015. No cross-over.
Repertoire One year cross-over. Students may play Repertoire from either the 2008 or 2015 Syllabus.
Etudes One year cross-over. Students may play Etudes from either the 2008 or 2015 Syllabus.
Technical Tests New requirements effective September 1, 2015. No cross-over.
Ear Tests: Preparatory A–Level 8 New requirements effective September 1, 2015. No cross-over.
Ear Tests: Levels 9–10 One year cross-over. Students may choose either 2008 or 2015 Syllabus requirements.
Sight Reading New requirements effective September 1, 2015. No cross-over.

Item Cross-over Period
All examination elements 2015 Syllabus requirements are in effect.

 

A cross-over period for Repertoire and Etudes will be in effect from September 1, 2015 through to August 31, 2016. Candidates may play Repertoire selections and Etudes from either the 2008 or 2015 Syllabus (or a combination of both) in any examination session during the cross-over period.

There will be no cross-over period for Technical Tests. The requirements in the 2015 Syllabus will become effective as of September 1, 2015 at all levels. Students already preparing under the 2008 Syllabus requirements will find they are able to transition easily into the new streamlined requirements in the 2015 Syllabus.

There will be no cross-over period for Ear Tests in Preparatory through Level 8 (Elementary and Intermediate levels). The new requirements in the 2015 Syllabus will become effective as of September 1, 2015. The changes to the Ear Tests at the lower levels have been designed in such a way as to support student success.

There will be a cross-over period for Ear Tests in Levels 9 and 10 (Advanced levels) only. From September 1, 2015 until August 31, 2016, students at Levels 9 and 10 may choose to be examined under either the 2008 or 2015 Syllabus requirements. Some students and teachers may benefit from the additional time to become comfortable with the new ear-test elements at these levels.

There will be no cross-over period for Sight Reading. The new requirements in the 2015 Syllabus will become effective as of September 1, 2015. The changes to the Sight Reading Rhythm tests (tapping a steady beat while speaking, tapping, or clapping the given rhythm) have been designed in such a way as to support student success, and thus a cross-over period will not be offered.
